The History of SCREENEZE®
From Frustration to Innovation
Every great product begins with a problem—and for SCREENEZE®, that problem started on a porch in Knoxville, Tennessee. In the early 2000s, Ray Bass was dealing with the same frustrations many homeowners faced: traditional screening systems that sagged, tore, or required frequent repairs. These systems often relied on splines and staples that were not only difficult to install, but also prone to failure over time—especially in areas with high humidity or fluctuating temperatures.
As a problem-solver by nature, Ray couldn’t let it go. He began experimenting with alternative materials and installation methods, determined to create a system that would eliminate the headaches of porch maintenance. After countless prototypes and hands-on testing, he developed what would become the SCREENEZE® System—a groundbreaking, no-spline, self-tensioning screen system that was easier to install, longer-lasting, and more visually appealing.
Recognizing the potential for something bigger, David Seuberling, a seasoned builder from Cincinnati, Ohio, took interest in Ray’s work. With over 35 years of experience in residential construction and a keen eye for innovation, David knew this wasn’t just another home improvement product—it was a game-changer. He acquired a controlling interest in Home Improvement Systems, Inc., the company behind SCREENEZE®, and together, they set out to transform the way porches were built across the country.
The SCREENEZE Product Timeline
The 2000’s: Laying the Foundation
SCREENEZE® officially launched in 2003 alongside the founding of Home Improvement Systems, Inc. The original Legacy SCREENEZE® System brought a revolutionary no-spline approach to the market, offering a stronger, cleaner, and more efficient alternative for screened porches. Just a few years later, in 2006, the company introduced the Arch System (Flatbar)—allowing installers to easily screen arched openings without needing metal-bending tools or templates. These early innovations helped set the tone for SCREENEZE’s reputation as a practical and forward-thinking solution for porch construction.
The 2010’s: Expanding Versatility
In 2016, SCREENEZE debuted two new systems to offer even more installation flexibility. The Plinth Mounting System was designed to accommodate installations on masonry surfaces like concrete and brick, while the Gazebo System (Wedge) offered a way to maintain screen tension on angled or curved structures like gazebos. These additions gave contractors greater design freedom and allowed SCREENEZE systems to adapt to more complex outdoor living spaces.
The 2020’s: Modernizing the Experience
SCREENEZE continued to evolve in the 2020s with sleek, user-friendly enhancements. In 2020, the SNAPTRACK System was released, offering a slimmer profile, hidden fasteners, and pre-drilled aluminum for an even cleaner and more streamlined installation process. Then in 2021, SCREENEZE introduced its first Sliding Screen Door—a barn-door-style screen with a full-view frame and zero-clearance glide, making it the perfect complement to existing SCREENEZE or SNAPTRACK systems. These new products continue to reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and ease of use.
From its Knoxville roots to porches across the country, SCREENEZE® continues to offer innovative, reliable screening solutions. Whether you're building new or upgrading an existing space, there's a SCREENEZE® system designed to make outdoor living better.
