Screened Porches v. Open-Air Porches
One question that we get asked quite frequently is:
“Why should I invest in a screened porch? What’s so different about it compared to an open-air porch?”
While we can’t be the final decision-maker for your home and what you choose to do with your porch, we can share the reasons pros and cons of both options. We know we are somewhat biased (being a screened porch manufacturer, and all), but we tried to be as neutral as possible when analyzing and comparing the two. So, if you’re interested in seeing the pros and cons to both a screened porch and an open-air porch, and specifically why we recommend screening in your space, continue reading for our research.
OPEN-AIR PORCHES
Pros
Less expensive
Quicker to build, make alterations, or fix
Absolutely no obstructions or changes to visibility
Plants and surrounding flowers can grow easier in and around
Cons
Bugs, animals, and other debris
Requires more constant cleaning
Can only be used during three seasons (unless in tropical locations)
Less technological additions are available
Weather conditions and other ailments can come straight in
SCREENED PORCHES
Pros
No bugs and fewer external nuisances
Requires less cleaning and overall maintenance
Permits up to four seasons of use (with proper preparation)
Added privacy from the general outside
Plenty of technological additions are available
Weather conditions and other ailments are prevented from entering the space
Cons
More expensive
Slower to build, make alterations, or fix
Very minimal, but existent, change to visibility
THE FINAL COMPARISON
Investing in a screened porch is the best choice when compared to an open-air porch. Screened porches increase your home’s ROI more-so than traditional open-air porches. They also allow for security from bugs, debris, weather, and other nuisances. While they may cost more and take longer to alter/improve than open-air porches, they have so many more benefits and hidden perks. While any home improvement is reason for discussion and consideration, we truly believe that investing in a screened porch is a better choice all-around than its counterpart - an open-air porch.
