Summertime Industry Trends of 2022

It’s important to stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends. As we dive further into the summertime, construction and home improvement trends are fluctuating more and more, so it’s vital that we, and those within the industry, keep a firm eye on what’s happening next. We’ve compiled some of the recent trends that we find most relevant to the industry, so read on to know what’s happening now and what’s to come!

More Complex Construction Projects

Homeowners these days are not merely looking for one home renovation or a simple one-story home. Homeowners are going big, bold, and are seeking the most ‘bang for their buck.’ As this year progresses with the volatility of the housing market, many homeowners are now more than ever preparing to settle at their current home for some time, making those long dreamed-about renovations and construction projects come true. They are also seeking these projects and improvements to be achieved in an ecologically-sustainable manner, which adds an extra layer of complexity to the overall project. While this trend changes frequently, it is also one to be most mindful of because it focuses directly on the homeowners’ needs and wants.

Higher Costing Construction & Home Improvements

Although homeowners are engaging in many home improvement projects these days, the costs of supplies, such as brick and lumber, are much higher than they traditionally are. From the contractor’s end, it will be important to weigh the pros and cons of keeping certain materials on-hand, and ensuring that enough projects are taken on to cover the overhead costs of the materials. From the homeowner’s perspective, it will be important that the project is done how they want it, and at the most reasonable price it can be. Many experts predict construction costs will peak later this year, but there’s much speculation as to when it will and regarding what materials.

More Focus on Sustainability and Environmentally-Friendly

This is by no means a new trend and it certainly is not going away any time soon. It’s 2022 - homeowners and contractors alike want the most sustainable practices implemented and the most environmentally-friendly products used. If you’re not already familiar with the materials best for the environment or the home additions that are most directly linked to sustainability, you are behind. One of the easiest ways to demonstrate a care for the environment as a contractor is to document and utilize less natural resources than you were using the previous years (even if it’s only by a hair). One of the easiest ways to be a mindful homeowner is to ask about sourcing of materials and the ecological footprint of the proposed project.

Labor Shortages

A major trend that has been continuing through virtually all industries since the COVID-19 pandemic is labor shortages. The construction industry is no different in this regard than any other industry, however it’s still a major point that should be addressed for the future success within the Construction & Home Improvement Industries. One strategy that many contractors are doing is offering a higher starting salary to their workers. Another strategy implemented by many contractors is using more word-of-mouth referrals and recruiting efforts for new employees. Regardless of strategies to improve the labor force, this is a trend across all industries that needs to be worked upon for the future.

Increase in Technological Usage & Implementation

Technology and its application within new projects is growing and increasingly becoming necessary for a quality outcome. Many contractors are ensuring that either they know more details regarding electrical work or that someone on their team knows much about electrical work (not just in lighting, but in all possibilities present in 2022). Homeowners are expecting that contractors can make their wildest dreams come true, and that is inclusive of adding lights, surround sound systems, speakers, heating and air conditioning, and so much more.
