How to Continue Using Your Screened Porch in Winter

As the weather gets colder and the days grow shorter, you may find yourself wondering …

“How can I still use my screened porch in this season?”

“Should I close it down for the winter or leave it open?”

“Would my screened porch work for additional, temporary storage over the winter?”

Fortunately, we’ve asked ourselves these very questions over the years and we have created a helpful blog to assist in ways that best make use of your screened porch in the colder months.

Keep On Using It

If you are fortunate enough to not live in the parts of the country that gets snowy, cold, and super dark through the winter, keep on about your business as if nothing has happened. Screened porches are merely an extension of your other living space, so decorating and hosting within your screened porch is just as good as within your home. While you may still need to look into modifying your space slightly, depending on what temperature and comfortability you enjoy, your screened porch space should otherwise be fully usable year-round.

Panel It Up For Storage

While we’ve already mentioned the covering of your screened porch openings with vinyl in our last blog, that’s only one small step for this recommendation. The other step is putting some of your summer clothes boxes, miscellaneous projects, and more out within the space so that you have more usable interior home space until the spring comes back around. While this excludes you and your family from using your screened porch for entertainment purposes over the winter, you may not have otherwise used it for anything if not for storage. Who knows - your screened porch might even be the ideal place for Santa to store some presents for your children or family members.

Modify Your Screened Porch For Winter

For some individuals (like those of us in the Midwest), the best option for continual screened porch usage through the winter months is modification. As aforementioned, the last blog details how best to get your screened porch winter-ready if you’re intending to continue using it throughout the winter. In the Midwest, it might be -10 degrees one day, then 50 degrees another, so modifying your screened porch to accommodate weather changes while still optimizing and prioritizing your screened porch is key.

If you’re planning on continuing to use your screened porch over the winter months, let us know in what way you’re going to use it.
