Creative Crafts: DIY Projects for All Ages

Making crafts can be the perfect way to unwind and enjoy yourself after a long day. Crafts can be made by people of all ages, and they can be as easy or challenging as you please. For kids, crafts are a perfect way to unlock creativity and to make something that can be cherished for years. For adults, crafts are the perfect way to take your mind off any stressful things, and a way to unplug from today digital world. Also, crafts can be a great bonding opportunity for couples and their children, siblings, friends, and any combination of people you can think of. In this blog, we have gathered 5 crafts that can be enjoyed by someone of any age.

No-Sew Fleece Blanket

Supplies:

  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter/ fabric ruler/cutting mat.

  • 1.5 or 2 yards of fleece fabric in two colors/patterns

  • Paper or thin cardboard for cutting template (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Line up the two pieces of fabric so that one is on top of the other and all sides are lined up. Using your desired cutting tool, trim off any overlap between the two pieces, and any curled ends or edges.

  2. Cut 5″ x 5″ square in each of the 4 corners of the two fabrics which should be lined up on top of each other.

  3. Now, along the sides of the fabrics, make 5-inch cuts every 1 inch, connecting the corners. This will create many 5″ x 1″ flaps hanging off all sides of the blanket.  Using paper or cardboard you can make a template for cutting these lines.

  4. Now, tie the strips from the bottom fabric to the corresponding top fabric. Once this is done, your blanket is ready!

Make Slime

Supplies:

  • 100ml PVA white glue

  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • Gel food coloring

  • 1-3 tsps. contact lens cleaning solution (must contain boric acid), glitter

Instructions:

  1. Squeeze the glue into a mixing bowl and then add the bicarbonate of soda and mix well.

  2. Add a drop or two of your selected gel food coloring. The more drops added the more prominent the color will be.

  3. Add 1 tsp contact lens solution and mix well for a minute. The consistency will slowly take a slime shape. If this isn't happening, slowly adding more lens solution should do the trick.

  4. Take the slime out of the bowl and throw it around in your hands so it takes shape. Now you're done!

Hand-painted rocks

Supplies

  • A smooth rock

  • Paint and brushes/ paint pens

  • Modge Podge or another clear brush on.

Instructions:

  1. Find smooth rocks that are the perfect size for your project. Rocks with fewer ridges are the easiest to decorate. These rocks can be found in nature and possibly at craft stores.

  2. Before you do anything, you need to clean your rocks. Once this is done you can seal off your rocks. Use Mod Podge, spray sealer, or another clear brush on to seal the rocks, ensuring the paint is used to its full potential.

  3. Now you are ready to paint! Outdoor or multi-surface acrylic paints work great, as do paint pens and markers. It is best to do multiple coats so that the paint is apparent. Once the paint is dry, seal off the rock again to protect the paint and ensure your rock's longevity.

tie-dye shirts

Supplies

  • Tee Shirt

  • Procion dye

  • Rubber bands

  • Rubber gloves

  • Squeeze bottles for the dye

  • Soda ash

  • Large Ziplock bags

  • A tub for soaking the shirts

  • Wooden dowel.

Instructions:

  1. Soak the tee shirt in a solution of warm water and soda ash for about 10 minutes. Make sure you are wearing rubber gloves. After 10 minutes, wring out the shirt thoroughly.

  2. Place the tee shirt front side down on a flat surface. Place the dowel rod, or your finger, in the center of the shirt and then turn it clockwise into a pie shape. Then, add rubber to keep the pie-shaped shirt in place.

  3. Wearing rubber gloves, place the tee shirt on paper towels and/or plastic so that the dye doesn’t stain anything below it. Apply the dies to both sides of the tee shirt.

  4. Place your dyed shirt in a Ziploc bag for 24 hours. Once this time is up, rinse the shirt under cold water until the water runs clear. Once the shirt is dry, it is ready to wear!
